Ever since the Lumière brothers’ 50-second ‘Arrival of a Train at Ciotat Station’ amazed and terrified its audience in 1896, cinema has loved the railway. No wonder: trains make an enclosed stage set, a built-in plot driver and, with all that moving scenery, a meta-replica of the cinema experience itself.
