Calgary-based Canadian Pacific Railway is investing in new technology to detect problems on the rails in a bid to avoid future derailments.
In an interview, Keith Shearer — CP’s assistant vice-president of safety and sustainability — said the technology, which will be deployed in 2020, will be unique among North American Class I railroads. The wayside detection system will use electromagnetic sensors to flag surface and subsurface cracks in rail car wheels.
